Common mother-and-stepmother (Tussilago farfara)

Common mother-and-stepmother (Tussilago farfara) Is one of the most common weeds in gardens and vegetable gardens. In early spring, the snow has not yet melted, and the southern gentle slopes are already covered with a bright yellow carpet of flowers on long stalks. It blooms coltsfoot, one of the earliest spring flowers. Its succulent leaves appear much later at the end of May, when the entire flowering stem is crowned with them.

The upper side of the leaf of the plant is cold, shiny - this is the "stepmother", and the lower side is warm, softly pubescent - this is a kind and affectionate "mother". Basal leaves are round-cordate, serrated at the edges, sitting on long petioles. It is easy to confuse it with medicinal podbele, in which the leaves are larger and not round, but triangular-heart-shaped.

This ingenuous plant has a rich set of beneficial properties due to the healing components that are included in its composition: inulin and mucous substances, carotenoids and tannins, various organic acids, mineral salts, sterols and many others.

The collection of leaves is carried out in June – July, when they are still relatively small and almost naked on the upper side. You need to cut them off with a short leg. You can not collect very young leaves and pubescent on both sides.

The collected leaves must be quickly dried, spread out in a thin layer, and periodically turned over. Any leaves that turn yellow and brown during drying must be removed immediately. You can store the prepared raw materials for no more than 3 years.

Flowers are harvested in early spring. They are usually dried in a cool oven or in the attic. Flowers are stored for no more than 2 years.
