An ornamental garden, in turn, can be either a monosad (rose garden, sirengarium, etc.), or a complex one, consisting of plants belonging to different life forms and families, or consist of different species of the same family. A typical garden of this type is heather. Some botanists divide this very extensive family into 2: heather and lingonberry. Plants belonging to this family are mostly shrubs with beautiful flowers. They bloom in spring, summer or autumn. The fruits are either a box (erica, heather, andromeda, brukentalia, etc.), or a berry (blueberry, lingonberry, blueberry, cranberry). Some plants of the family are deciduous, some are evergreen. They all have in common the requirements for growing conditions. The landing site should be well lit by the sun (in some cases partial shade is possible). The soil should have a very acidic reaction (pH 3.5 - 4.5), as well as allow water and air to pass through well. Wind protection desirable. Humidification and watering are moderate. A heather garden can be located on the shore of a pond, an alpine slide, or just in any corner of the garden or lawn area. From tall shrubs in a heather garden, rhododendrons, tall blueberries are planted, from low ones: erica, heather, lingonberries, cranberries, andromeda, brukentalia. If desired, conifers (thuja, juniper, cypress), perennials and other plants can be added to the composition. Rhododendron is a deciduous or evergreen, flowering shrub with a height of 1.0 to 3.0 m. The color of flowers is white, yellow, orange, red, lilac, and others. It blooms in late May - June.

Erica is an evergreen, low, carpet-shaped shrub, 15 - 25 cm high. It blooms in spring - March - May. The color of the flowers is white, pink, lilac, red, etc. leaves are dark green or golden yellow. Andromeda is an evergreen, low, dense shrub 25-40 cm high. The leaves are lanceolate, leathery, green with a silvery-blue bloom. Flowers are spherical, numerous. The color of the flowers is white, pink, dark pink. Blooms in late May-June. Brukentalia is an evergreen shrub that resembles Erica. The bush is 15-20 cm high, up to 50 cm wide. The flowers are numerous, pink. Fills the flowering gap for plants from the heather family, blooming in late June - July. Lingonberry is an evergreen, undersized shrub 15-30 cm high with white-pink berries. It blooms and bears fruit twice a season (flowering: May, July; fruiting: July, September).

Large-fruited cranberry is an evergreen, creeping, ground cover shrub with dark red, edible fruits. Blooms in June. The flowers are bright pink. The berries ripen in September. Leaves change color: from May to September - green; from October to April - burgundy. All of these types of heather are quite winter-hardy and practically do not require shelter for the winter. But it is possible to expand the species composition of a heather garden at the expense of plants of this family, which necessarily require shelter for the winter. These types are: gaultree, kalmia, pieris and others. An interesting solution in the design of a heather garden is the use of sawn peat. A curb is laid out of peat bricks, behind which plants are planted. On the one hand, this creates an interesting contrast, on the other, it limits the space. In addition, peat is a natural material, it does not deteriorate for a long time and does not have a negative impact on the environment.
