Sowing the lawn in autumn

Is it worth planting a lawn in the fall if it was not possible to do it in the summer? The answer to this question is not so straightforward. Let's try to figure it out.

Autumn sowing of lawn grasses is quite possible. Moreover, in the southern regions of our country, autumn is the best time to start arranging a lawn. In summer, when the weather is dry, the seeds may not sprout, in the fall, more favorable conditions are created for their germination, as the soil moisture rises.

As for central Russia, it is hardly worth sowing lawn grasses there in September or October: before the frost, the plants will not have time to get stronger and will have a bad winter, besides, the weather in autumn can be very unstable. In the middle lane, winter sowing is practicedseed - usually in November. Seeds are sown before the appearance of a stable snow cover at a time when the ground is already frozen, but not yet covered with snow. At the same time, it is better to mulch crops with peat crumbs. With such a sowing period, the seeds do not have time to germinate in the fall, but they sprout together in the spring.

Winter sowing has its advantages and disadvantages. In the spring, you do not have to wait until the soil dries out to start sowing the seeds; the seeds themselves are in more favorable conditions, because in the spring there is much more moisture in the soil than in summer. In addition, after freezing (the so-called stratification), the seeds of many herbs germinate more actively.

At the same time, one should not forget that when sowing a lawn in winter, some of the seeds may hatch prematurely, and then die when cold weather sets in. Such a danger arises if the weather is warm for a long time in autumn, or if warming in spring alternates with sharp cold snaps. In addition, the seeds can be washed away by melt water or die from getting wet. As a result, bald spots form on the lawn, especially if there is poor drainage in the area, and the surface of the lawn is not leveled and water stagnates in some places. Therefore, when sowing before winter, the sowing rate of seeds must be increased. Just in case, buy some stock of seeds so that, if necessary, overseed in the spring. In this case, it is advisable to use mixtures that include at least 4-5 types of herbs. The more varied the composition of the lawn mixture, the greater the likelihood of getting friendly shoots in the spring.

And the last thing: do not sow a lawn before winter on a site that has a strong slope. In this case, the spring melt water will wash off the topsoil along with the seeds.
