Removing winter shelters from roses

Roses are sensitive to spring warming, and with the first rays of sunshine in March, their period of natural rest ends. The buds start to grow, and you need to seize the time to open the roses in time. If opened early, spring frosts can damage young germinating buds. If you open it late, young shoots appear, the plants have expended energy and nutrition, they must be cut off in the spring. In addition, roses can vanish in the shelter. In March - early April, it is necessary to remove the snow from the shelters, cut through the branch grooves. Make sure that melt water does not stagnate in the places where roses are planted. It is good to remove the shelter in cloudy weather in stages: first open the ends, then remove the shelter from the north or east side, then from the south side, in order to avoid sunburn of the bark and drying of the branches by the wind after a long stay of roses in a humid environment. Shelters with spruce branches, sawdust, leaves should be removed as the soil thaws, but it is imperative to loosen the caked spruce branches to allow air access. Climbing and standard roses are raised on supports when the ground finally thaws.

One of the most important agricultural activities is pruning roses. The durability of the bush, its maximum decorative effect, the quality of flowers and the abundance of flowering depend on the timeliness of pruning.

The main pruning is spring. It is better to carry it out before bud break. The tool (pruner, garden knife, garden file) must be well sharpened. First, you should carry out a cosmetic pruning of roses after removing the shelter - remove all damaged shoots, remnants of leaves and all this must be burned. The main spring pruning must be carried out taking into account the biological characteristics of individual groups and varieties of roses.

After pruning the roses, sprinkle with a solution of copper sulfate (100 g per 10 liters of water), spud, shade - cover with lutrasil or film. When the danger of the return of spring night frosts has passed, the roses should be unbroken and shaded off. During the entire growing season, regularly carry out preventive spraying against pests and diseases of roses.
