Daylilies in the small garden

Daylilies are amazing plants

combining rarely compatible quality:

beauty, elegance, unpretentiousness.

Daylilies in the garden are not a simple topic, but that is why it is interesting. This culture appeared many years ago and at first I did not really think about where and how to plant daylilies. In most cases, I used them as a padding to flowering shrubs. Over time, acquiring new varieties and studying them, I came to the conclusion that daylilies deserve a more worthy attitude: after all, during flowering they have almost the entire color spectrum - from almost white, through the entire color gamut, to almost black, they combine several colors on the petals and shades, show the most diverse, sometimes exotic, shape. The height of daylilies is also different - from dwarfs to giants. The choice is huge!

As the heroine of the famous film said: "... he has no shortcomings." After all, even a one-day flowering daylily turns into dignity - every day opens new fresh flowers to replace wilted ones. But the most important advantage of this perennial is that it requires minimal maintenance. Having planted it, you will enjoy its flowering next year, and after another two years the daylily will turn into a "beautiful swan" - the bush will grow and show you an enchanting flowering.

You can leave the daylily without dividing for 7-8 years, and when they say that the daylily can be divided after 3 years, this does not mean that it needs to be divided after 3 years. Personally, I am a supporter of the variety growing well, getting stronger, and only then will it show all its declared varietal qualities. It is the adult daylily that will reward you with abundant flowering, present you with a huge bouquet of charming flowers, and create a bright spot of color in the garden.

The foliage of daylilies should not be ignored either - wide-linear light green leaves, falling, flowing, create a beautiful bush, decorative from early spring to late autumn. I like daylilies in the fall, when golden yellow spots appear on the leaves. I am in no hurry to cut them off, leaving them until frost. There are varieties with bluish foliage and variegated, with white-creamy yellow stripes along the leaf. They even have a striped peduncle.

So we come to how to properly place all this beauty in the garden. There is one more positive aspect of the daylily - it seems to be constantly in motion, therefore it attracts attention even when it is not blooming. This is due to the fact that, geometrically, the daylily bush is a cone standing at the top - such a figure is unstable, dynamic, creates the illusion of movement, but movement always focuses attention. Based on this property, we can recommend planting the daylily as a tapeworm, near static forms, which can be paving, large stones, small sculptures.

Planting daylilies in the front area is appropriate. And, looking ahead, I will say that here you can plant the most exotic varieties, restrictions are not relevant here. In a small garden in the front area, low conifers (thuja, spruce, junipers) are often planted, either in the shape of a cone, but firmly standing on the base, or a hemisphere, which also has a very stable position. It is the daylilies planted in compositions with conifers that will rid this composition of monumentality and create a good mood. And another hint: against the background of dark green needles, varieties in red tones will look very advantageous, and a wide gold border will add a sense of celebration. But varieties of other tones will also be good - it all depends on the color of the needles. However, I will talk about this later.

Plant daylilies by the seating area, where you sit down in the evening after gardening - by the bench, patio, gazebo, or by the kitchen window where you cook. Here you need to plant white, pastel or yellow varieties - they will be highlighted for a long time in the dark, and red and blue ones will disappear.

Many people know that there are fragrant daylilies, as well as those that bloom at night. These include my favorite species daylily lemon yellow (Hemerocallis citrina) with lemon yellow flowers. It blooms in the evening and holds the flower until morning. According to my observations, this daylily also blooms during the day in cloudy, rainy weather, blooms profusely and for a long time. Tall flower stalks proudly carry many flowers over bluish foliage. Their smell is delicate, pleasant, with citrus notes. This unassuming daylily will be great in any garden style.

It was not by chance that I mentioned fragrant daylilies - I recommend planting them in the marked recreation areas. So, you will fully enjoy the beauty and amazing smell of this wonderful, in all respects flower - daylily.

But I will talk about other fragrant daylilies, as well as about the styles of gardens where the daylily will grow advantageously in another article.
