Thanks to the efforts of breeders, interesting and unusual varieties and hybrids appear on the seed market every year. Modern trends in breeding allow each farmer and amateur gardener to find “their own” cucumber, to obtain products that are most suitable for a specific purpose, to facilitate planting care and save growing area. So, we present promising directions in the selection of cucumbers.
Superbundled cucumbers
In each node of such plants, up to 8-10 or more ovaries are formed. Small leaves and short internodes allow them to be grown with equal success both in open ground (on a trellis) and in spring greenhouses. Due to their compactness, these hybrids are ideal for rooms with a small area (for example, for loggias, balconies, verandas). The more powerful and leafy the plants are, the more zelents can be tied to the plant. The largest tufts are formed under the trellis and on well-lit side shoots. In shading conditions, the "beam" is significantly reduced.
Parthenocarpic hybrids of super-beam cucumbers F1 Balcony and F1 City Gherkin, F 1 Hummingbird, F1 Machaon, as well as bee-pollinated gherkins F1 Acorn, F1 Captain, F1 True Friends (the latter are distinguished by larger leaves and a normal size of internodes) appeared as a result of the painstaking work of domestic breeders relatively recently, but have already proven themselves very well when grown in various conditions. All hybrids are characterized by complex disease resistance.
Single-stem parthenocarpic cucumbers with limited main stem growth
Previously weakly branching hybrids are characterized by strong growth of the main stem, which in the greenhouse must be pinched above the trellis wire. New early maturing parthenocarpic sprinter hybrids F1 Artel and F1 Arshin the main stem stops growing on its own, facilitating plant maintenance and reducing the risk of plant thickening. The hybrids are suitable for cultivation in spring greenhouses, tunnels, as well as outdoors. With a strong load of greens in the lower tier, the height of the main stem does not exceed 90 cm for F1 Arshin, 100 cm for F1 Artel. In a greenhouse, the maximum stem height can reach 150-190 cm for F1 Arshin, and 170-200 cm for F1 Artel. several small side shoots may appear.
Plants of these hybrids almost do not require formation costs, so they can be safely ranked as "weekend" varieties that do not require much maintenance.
"Pencil" cucumbers
This is a completely new direction in breeding. Zelentsy in these hybrids 11-16 cm long (pencil size), smooth, thin, capable of not thickening for a long time after reaching the market size. These fruits are ideal for pickling or pickling in small jars.
F1 Magic Flute - parthenocarpic tuberous hybrid of the "pencil" type: smooth, thin greens of the same size are well suited for vertical stacking in a jar "under the lid" when canning.
Plants F1 Magic Flute are tall, with medium (limited) branching. Zelentsy 11-15 cm long, dark green in color. They are distinguished by the high quality of fresh and canned fruits.
Features of agricultural technology of new varieties of cucumber
The agricultural technology for growing new varieties does not generally differ from the agricultural technology for growing cucumber, but it has some nuances associated with the characteristics of the growth and development of plants. So, for superbundled cucumbers, it is very important to maintain an optimal water regime. In conditions of a lack of moisture, plants grow less strong, which reduces the number of ovaries in the nodes, worsens the filling of greens.
In order for the fruits of the pencil varieties to be smooth, without bends and narrowed ends, it is necessary to feed the plantings often, but in small doses.
