Many gardeners are immersed in the thought of arranging a lawn, even notorious gardeners are trying to allocate a very small area for a lawn on 6 acres. And rightly so, because it is necessary to create turf areas in the garden. The lawn is combined with flower beds, groups of shrubs and even vegetable beds. It will take a lot of effort to grow a dense turf covering from lawn grasses. The creation of a high-quality perennial lawn is a long and by no means easy task.
For those gardeners who do not want to wait long and have additional funds, there is a fast progressive lawn method, carried out by laying turf mats, called roll lawns.
Sod lawn mats are grown from lawn grass seeds, fixed on a strong mesh base, in specialized farms for 3 years. The area of one rug is 0.8 m2, weight - up to 12-15 kg. It has the following dimensions: width 40 cm, length 1.9-2 m, turf thickness 2-2.5 cm. These turf slabs can be easily rolled or stacked on pallets. The biggest advantage of a roll lawn is that after 1-2 weeks after installation, a good lawn coverage appears and the result becomes visible.
Preparatory work
Do not rush to purchase lawn plates until the site has been carefully prepared. All work is done in a timely manner and efficiently, because the longevity of the lawn depends on it. The soil is prepared in the same way as for a conventional sowing lawn.

When the construction and laying of communications are completed, all construction and household waste must be removed from the site; it cannot be buried in the ground. If the question of the lawn arose at a time when the site was already turfed with dissimilar grasses, then you need to cut off the old, unusable turf. It is usually stored and used to make nutritious compost. Then, the remaining weed vegetation is carefully selected from the site, especially rhizomatous grasses: lambs, wheatgrass, nettles, thistles, coltsfoot, as well as plantains, dandelions, etc. required precautions. Using a shovel or cultivator, you need to dig up the soil, achieving crushing clods up to 2 cm in diameter.
On the territory with clay soil, a cushion of sand and gravel with a layer of 5-10 cm should be laid to improve the water-air properties of the root layer of the soil. Also, the necessary soil components are introduced into the soil to improve the structure, reduce acidity and increase soil fertility. A week before laying the lawn, a complex mineral fertilizer is scattered at the rate of 50-60 g / m2. All added components are thoroughly mixed and the site planning is started. It is important to know that when the area is rolled with a lawn roller, the soil substrate is leveled and compacted, which is especially important if the soil is saturated with peat. The thickness of the fertile soil layer should be at least 10-15 cm. These works are carried out in dry weather so that the soil does not stick to the roller.
Purchase and storage of rolled lawn
The rolled lawn must be purchased immediately before laying, since it cannot be stored for a long time! It is advisable to carry out all work on laying the roll lawn within 1-2 days after cutting and delivery to the territory. It is better to keep the lawn rolls in the shade until the time of installation. The fact is that in hot weather "rugs" overheat, turn yellow and deteriorate. To avoid damage to the plates, they are regularly watered. If the plates are unfolded and watered, then this laborious procedure, carried out only in emergency cases, can extend the life of the lawn cover by 1-2 days.
Laying roll lawn
Laying is possible in spring, summer and early autumn. In the spring-summer period, there is a need for regular watering. Dry and not too hot weather is preferable for laying lawns.
When everything is ready, the rugs are neatly unfolded and placed in even rows on the places intended for laying. First, they put the first row, with the help of a thick board, they carefully tamp the message of the laid layer, achieving full contact with the ground. At the same time, do not push hard or drive in the sod in order to protect it from rupture. You can roll the mat with a light roller, then there will be tight contact with the soil, and excess air will be removed.
Laying the next row begins with a plate that is shorter than the standard length, so that in the future there is no coincidence of transverse seams, that is, you need to adhere to the "checkerboard order".
When laying the sod, the adjacent rows should be tightly adjacent to each other. It should not be allowed that the lawn plates overlap each other, and also leave gaps between the plates more than 1.5-2 cm wide.
In those places where the territory of the site is not rectangular, but a more complex shape, such pieces of turf are cut out and applied, which are necessary to cover a specific place.
All seams are carefully covered with fertile soil mixture. For clay soils, a mixture of peat, loam and sand is used in a ratio of 1: 2: 4, and for sandy loam soils, the same mixture is used in a ratio of 2: 4: 1. In peaty areas, the seams are covered with peat and sand mixed in a 3: 1 ratio.
Features of the care of the rolled lawn
The lawn should be watered with plenty of water every day to provide conditions for the early growth of the laid rugs, especially during the hot and dry summer months. It is impossible to walk on the newly laid rolled lawn for 15-20 days, since during this period the sod grows with the soil.

When the lawn is fully grown, the frequency of watering is reduced to 1-2 times every 10 days. As with a seed lawn, regular mowing is required. When the grass grows, the first mowing is carried out, in which only the ends of the lawn grass are cut. In the future, the lawn mower knives are gradually lowered. The lawn is cut from April-May to October. During the wet seasons of the season, the grass is mowed more often, and in summer, on very dry days - less often, setting the knives a little higher than usual. Before watering, you can carry out mineral dressing, which begins from the second year after laying.
