Correct pruning of clematis

For clematis to be healthy and bloom well, it is necessary to carry out correct pruning every year. Depending on its characteristics, clematis are divided into three groups. The first group includes princes and some small-flowered clematis, which bloom in early spring and do not require pruning. Clematis of groups Patens, Florida, Lanuginoza, blooming in early summer on last year's shoots and, under favorable conditions, again in July - August on shoots of the current year, belong to the second pruning group. In autumn, weak and dead shoots are removed, the rest are cut off, leaving 10-15 knots (1.2-1.5 m), folded into a ring and covered for the winter. Clematis blooming on the shoots of the current year belongs to the third pruning group. These are clematis of the Zhakman, Vititsella, Integrifolia and herbaceous groups, in which the shoots die off at the end of the growing season, for example, Rekta. Pruning this group of clematis is very simple: in the fall, all shoots are cut to the base or to the first true leaf.
