Simple irrigation system for the site

Oscillating Sprinkler

Currently, one of the leading companies in the production of garden irrigation systems for amateurs and professionals is GARDENA (Germany). The equipment of this company allows you to create a system for manual or automatic irrigation of plants, including drip irrigation, on the garden plot.

Instead of a stationary (underground) irrigation system for the summer period, you can assemble a simple garden branched irrigation system from components. To do this, use 3/4 "and 1/2" garden hoses, various branching pieces and connectors from standard garden watering kits. Since the system is designed only for the warm season, it does not require any measures to protect it from frost.

The principle of building the system is simple. We take the necessary hoses for the main highways and lay them around the site - it is possible along the paths - they will interfere less when mowing the lawn. It is better to take these hoses with a larger diameter, 20-25 mm. Using various connectors and splitters, you can make bends from the main line in the desired directions. At the ends of these hoses, we attach overhead water supply columns (read more about them in the article on self-production of an automatic irrigation system) and connect short hose sections (5-6 m) of a smaller diameter (13-16 mm) to ground sprinklers with standard irrigation connectors.

It is advisable to use sprinklers with a swinging system (oscillating) or with impulse heads. They are less susceptible to clogging with mechanical impurities because have in their design removable filters for water purification. Ordinary rotating sprinklers work for a short time on contaminated water and simply stop rotating. Their axial couplings become clogged and the friction force increases many times over - it is not possible to wash them, and they have to be thrown away.

However, of all sprinkler designs, the most reliable are those with a change in the position of the spray head - usually it is made in the form of a disk with various nozzles squeezed into it. Changing the configuration of the irrigation circuit is done simply by turning the head to the desired spray. Their design provides for the main types of irrigation areas - circles, squares, rectangles of various sizes, semicircles. By adjusting the pressure in the system, a fairly large range of irrigated areas can be obtained. Since these sprinklers have no rotating parts, there is nothing to clog or break. Their only drawbacks can be considered only the cheapness of materials and simplicity of design.

Water supply overhead columns can also be used in conjunction with a drip irrigation system - drip and oozing hoses and drip lines. The connection principle is the same as with sprinklers - short hoses with connectors. Thus, you can water both the beds and the greenhouse - place the column in the right place and connect the hose - everything is simple ...

You can complicate the system a little, but simplify the work in the garden. We put the simplest controller and distributor in the "tap-hose" chain, and now automatic control of all irrigation is ready in your absence. Garden irrigation controllers are powered by 9V Krona batteries, and this battery lasts the entire season. There are solar powered models with rechargeable batteries. They are charged by the sun and can work even in cloudy weather. You simply program the start time and duration of watering, and you can go about your business - the garden will be watered on time. If you connect a rain or soil moisture sensor to this controller, then in the rain the system will be turned off and will start its work only after the sensor dries out or the soil moisture drops to the desired value.

The drip irrigation system can also be controlled using controllers that allow you to have up to 6 inclusions per day with a range from 1 minute to 9 hours for each irrigation. By connecting soil moisture sensors to the programmer, fully automatic control of all irrigation is possible. Drip equipment consists of a large number of droppers for various purposes and performance, micro-sprinklers, drip irrigation hoses that can be buried to a depth of 30 cm when used in the garden. Micro-drip hoses are usually used when watering garden plants, which are contraindicated or limited to watering from above - many delicate garden flowers. One of the latest innovations of the company is the “Quick & Easy” system for fast attachment of drip system elements to hoses.

Additionally, you can point out the advantages of installing a drip irrigation system for plants on the site or in the house. This is a big water saving when irrigating, more accurate dosage according to the needs of the plants, compared to manual irrigation. The effect of the drip system is especially noticeable in greenhouses, where excess moisture in the air - especially when growing tomatoes - is harmful. And the comfort inside the greenhouse with dry paths is much higher. It is possible to program watering at night when plant evaporation is minimal and the cost of water resources can be lower. In the presence of large areas and a variety of plantings, manual watering can be problematic due to the impossibility of even distribution of water over the beds and flower beds. Also, the presence of a drip irrigation system significantly increases the prestige of the site itself.

The approximate installation time for a simple garden irrigation system on the site can be 2-4 days from the moment the irrigation scheme is marked up to connecting to a water supply and testing the system.

In the fall, after the end of the summer season, you just have to disassemble the system into its component parts, free the hoses from water, disconnect the speakers, rinse them from the remnants of earth, grass and put them dry for winter storage in a warm garage or shed. Sprinklers-sprinklers undergo the same preparation for wintering - the remaining water is drained from them, the internal filters are washed, all adhering and dried residues from the ground, grass, and drops are carefully wiped off. You can use special sprays for plastics and rubber to better preserve the rubber seals on the fittings and plastic parts of the bodies. They are sold in large garden stores or in auto parts stores for caring for rubber parts of cars. On this we will consider the winter conservation completed.
