Heucheras in the garden

Heuchera are amazingly good all season. Even when other plants suffer from early frosts, they have the opposite - evergreen leaves surprise with a play of shades. The colors resemble patterns in a kaleidoscope - amber, scarlet, wine, green ...

In the garden, heucheras create a fabulous lightness, the festive color of wavy, carved leaves always attracts attention. Now there are many new unusual varieties of Heuchera. You just need to make the right choice.

Heykhera blood red(Heuchera sanguinea) prized for its scarlet miniature flowers, modest leaves only set off the beauty of other plants.

Heuchera small-flowered(Heuchera micrantha) immediately attracts attention with large maple-like purple-brown leaves. It looks rich in uniform borders.

The main advantage geykhera shaggy(Heuchera x brisoides) - long-term beautiful flowering. Tall flower stalks and large drooping bell-shaped flowers of strawberry color look very elegant. Small carved green leaves with a silver border form small bushes.

The most beautiful, perhaps - group of american hybrids... The range of brown, purple, amethyst tones is very rich. They are also distinguished by the shape and texture of the leaves. The wavy carved edges of the leaves at the heuchera Kang Kang... Brown-red gamut at Heuchera Amethyst Mist (lacquered, shiny), velor - at Velvet Knight... Add silver to the Heychera flower garden Silver Indiana, Prince of Silver... Heuchera will flare up with a bright crimson autumn Rachel... Heuchera with green leaves, but brown or burgundy veins are interesting. I love the variety very much Green Spice... The varieties with yellow leaves are completely unusual - this is just something from the realm of fantasy. Varieties Caramel, Marmalade, Amber Wave... I just want to revive a dark corner with them. But alas! They turned out to be less hardy in our climate. Fruit jelly often falls out, Amber Wave is capricious, many people complain about it. Of these, the most hardy Heuchera Caramel.

When growing geykhera, you need to comply with some conditions:

  • Heucheras require neutral fertile soil and good drainage.
  • They equally do not tolerate drying out and waterlogging.
  • Heuchers are more comfortable in partial shade, but in the sun the foliage is brighter and more colorful.
  • Heuchera can suffer from sunburn in the spring, it is better to shade them in the fall.
  • For the winter, their leaves are not cut off.
  • With dense shelter, they can blow out.
  • After flowering, it is better to remove the peduncles.
  • As the young leaves grow, the old ones are gradually removed.

Heuchera reach the greatest decorativeness by the age of four, and during this period they must be divided. Otherwise, the roots will begin to dry out and the plant will greatly weaken. You need to dig out a bush and divide it. It is best to divide in May or after flowering and regrowth of young leaves. But there is no need to delay with this - the plants take root slowly.

Close to Heicher tiarca or heart-leaved thiarella(Tiarella cordifolia)... It is a creeping plant with a rosette of round, heart-leaved wintering leaves on long petioles. Peduncle 10-15 cm, decorated with a cluster of graceful light cream flowers. Blooms in May for 30-40 days. Forms dense low thickets. Grows especially well in shaded areas with loose, drained soils. Frost resistant. Propagated by creeping shoots.

Heykherell (Heucherella) are also very tempting. These are hybrids obtained from the crossing of Heuchera and Tiarella. Each of the parents gave them a piece of their “soul”: tiarella - a delicate and lush bloom, and heuchera - the shape and color of the leaves. Caring for Heycherells is exactly the same as for Heycherells.

Heuchera and their relatives are unusual and stunningly beautiful even in the off-season. They are especially good, touched by the first autumn frosts, while their color can completely change. Therefore, both in early spring and late autumn, when there is so much lack of colors in the garden, Heucheras will deliver inexpressible pleasure by presenting a holiday of enchantingly painted leaves.
