Plinia stems, or jaboticaba: cultivation, reproduction

Pliny stem

Pliny stem (Plinia caulifloria), or Jaboticaba, is in demand among collectors of fruit myrtle plants, but in contrast to the closely related myrcial myrtle (Myrciaria floribunda) quite finicky, and can only be recommended to growers who have experience in growing other myrtle plants and are not afraid of failure. Getting this plant into the collection is quite problematic, this is due to the difficulties of breeding (the plant can be grown only from seeds or by grafting, and is not cut at all).

About cultivated species - on the page Pliny.

Lighting. It is advisable to provide the plant with a sunny place, in the summer to take it out into the open air after gradual adaptation to direct sun or in the light shade of trees. In closed rooms, be sure to provide good ventilation so that the plant does not overheat and does not get burned through the glass on the sunny windowsills. In winter, provide the plant with additional artificial lighting.

Temperature. In summer, the plant in the open air tolerates the entire possible temperature range; in a closed room, heat should be avoided, the temperature should not be higher than + 28 ° C. It prefers to winter in a moderately warm place, at a temperature of + 18 ... + 20 ° C, with additional lighting.

Watering. Jaboticaba does not tolerate both overdrying and stagnant water in the pot. To avoid problems with waterlogging with abundant watering, use small pots and well-drained soil throughout the volume for growing, adding about ¼ perlite to it.

Air humidity high is required, spraying of the crown is required.

Priming slightly acidic, ready-made universal peat substrate for indoor plants with the addition of perlite is suitable.

Transplants as the roots fill the previous volume. To avoid waterlogging, do not allow excess soil free from roots, do not use growth pots.

Flowering and fruiting at home, it occurs extremely rarely, the plant is capable of flowering under optimal conditions at least 10 years after the germination of the seed, at home such parameters are rarely created.

Wintering... The plant prefers to overwinter in a moderately warm place, at a temperature of + 18 ... + 20 ° C, with additional lighting.

Reproduction. Jaboticaba does not enter our flower shops as a pot or outdoor plant, the fruits do not tolerate transportation well and are not commercially available. The seeds quickly lose their germination after being removed from the fruit - it is desirable that during shipment they are in moist sphagnum, sawdust or peat. The plant practically does not cuttings, seedlings of the same species are needed for grafting as a rootstock, and fruiting at home practically does not occur. It is extremely rare to buy seedlings in Botsada that have fruit-bearing jabotykabs, or to bring a young plant from warm countries.

The germination rate of fresh seeds is about 90%, they germinate in 20-35 days. Young plants from seeds grow rather slowly at first.

Pruning and shaping. Due to the slow growth, formative pruning is needed only when the branches are exposed in unfavorable conditions.

Pests. Jaboticaba can be attacked by common houseplant pests such as mealybugs and scale insects.
