Growing Momordica

Momordica

Momordica can be grown not only in the open field, but also in a greenhouse or even in a room on a windowsill or on a balcony, as a vegetable garden crop or just an ornamental plant.

The Indian cucumber is a heat-loving and light-loving liana, reaching 5 meters in length, forming several shoots that quickly move along the support, attaching to it with threadlike antennae. The light green leaves of Momordica are like grape leaves, while the bright yellow flowers are reminiscent of cucumber flowers. Liana is especially decorative during the ripening period of fruits, elegantly hanging on thin long legs. At first they are pearlescent white, gradually turning bright orange.

Sowing seeds... Before sowing, momordica seeds are pre-soaked for one day in a saturated solution of potassium permanganate, and then in warm water. Then they are rinsed, placed in a damp cloth, which is wrapped in plastic wrap and placed in a warm place where the temperature is maintained at 30-40 degrees above zero. After pecking, each seed is placed on the edge in a 0.5 liter glass in the nutrient soil, deepening by 1.5 cm. Cover with a glass or bag on top. At a temperature of + 20 ... + 22 ° C, seedlings will appear in 2 weeks. Seedling care is normal.

Growing conditions... The plant prefers fertile soil. The momordica area should be well lit and sheltered from the winds. Requires the installation of vertical supports, located so that each plant has enough light, in the shade the ovary will crumble or the fruits will be small. The plant does not like sudden changes in temperature and drafts.

Watering regular, preferably with warm water only. During the growing season, care like cucumbers. Regular feeding with a frequency of 2 times a month (organic and mineral) is desirable.

Momordica fruits must be picked regularly, on the 8-10th day after emergence, otherwise the bitter taste will intensify. In addition, if a lot of fruits ripen on a liana at the same time, the plant weakens.

Momordica is available in Asian markets throughout the warm season. If you choose to grow this plant at home, you will harvest it in late summer or early fall. At the same time, you can most often see bitter melon on the shelves of large grocery hypermarkets. Even if you don't grow this extraordinary miracle vegetable on your own plot, take a chance - buy and bring home this long, warty fruit and get ready for an amazing culinary adventure.
