Peonies: Bashkir novelties

It is difficult to imagine the beginning of summer without the flowering of peonies, which have always been very popular in Russia. Today, there are more than 1000 varieties in culture, among which, unfortunately, there are very few domestic cultivars, and there are almost no suitable for industrial production. This indicates that, despite the difficulties of breeding research (the period of cultivation and reproduction of peonies lasts a very long time and is 12-15 years), such work is extremely interesting and is necessary for the development of ornamental gardening in

Russian regions.

Domestic varieties are in no way inferior to foreign ones: they are even more resistant to diseases and unfavorable weather conditions, they grow and develop faster.

Introduction and breeding studies were carried out on the basis of the Botanical Garden-Institute of the Ufa Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For crosses, the best varieties of hybrid peony were used. The assessment of promising seedlings was carried out according to the method of state variety testing and a package of documents of the State Commission of the Russian Federation for testing and protection of breeding achievements [1, 2].

In 2011, we submitted 8 candidates for varieties for state testing, which in 2012 were included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements approved for use. They received copyright certificates and patents (authors: O. Kravchenko, L. S. Novikova, L. N. Mironova, A. A. Reut). Below are the characteristics of hybrid peony varieties bred by the Botanical Garden-Institute of the Ufa Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. All new items are resistant to adverse weather conditions, diseases and pests, winter-hardy, drought-resistant and heat-tolerant, their flowers are located on the surface of the bush. Recommended for growing in central Russia.
