Useful information

Multicolored rowan beads

Genus Rowan(Sorbus) has about a hundred species, mainly of low trees and shrubs. Many of them are quite frost-resistant and can be recommended for the northern regions. There are drought-resistant species that are suitable for southern regions with a lack of moisture.

Rowan trees have high decorative qualities: they have a beautiful crown shape, attractive foliage, especially in autumn color, decorative fruits that persist on the branches in winter. Due to their unpretentiousness, rapid growth of most species, resistance to air pollution, these plants are indispensable in urban landscaping.

Recently, more and more different mountain ash, both species and varieties, have appeared on sale, information about which is still difficult to find even in special literature. In this regard, we offer you a small overview of new products that are most often found in garden centers and nurseries.

Of course, you need to start with rowan(Sorbus aucuparia). This well-known tree grows everywhere in Europe, Siberia and the Far East. A beautiful openwork crown of a pyramidal or openwork shape can reach 15 m in height and 7 m in width. The green, pinnate leaves turn red-yellow in autumn. In the second half of May, the tree simply drowns in the foam of large, up to 12 cm in diameter, corymbose inflorescences, consisting of small white-cream flowers. Since August, the plants are decorated with clusters of orange-red round fruits, about 8 mm in diameter. The plant is unpretentious and shade-tolerant, but it develops better on rich soils. Suffers from lack of moisture.

There are a number of varieties on sale. The most famous weeping form «Pendula " - a tree with drooping branches, forming a tent-like or umbrella-shaped crown in adult plants. This form is grown on a stem with a height of 180-220 cm. When grafted onto a root collar or a low stem, a "ground cover" plant can be obtained. The shoots are weakly branched, so formative pruning is necessary to create a dense crown.

Very dressed up variety «Fastigiata ", having a columnar or narrow-conical crown, very powerful, thick (young shoots with a diameter of about 1.5 cm), branches directed upwards. It has dark green foliage, larger than the main species, rich red fruits, up to 1 cm in diameter. Plants reach 8 m in height with a crown diameter of up to 5 m. In my opinion, specimens without a stem, or with a low stem, formed into one trunk, are more interesting.

Variety «Asplenifolia " its delicate foliage resembles a fern.

Often offered by Western nurseries and occasionally we have a form «Rossica Major ", in which, in comparison with the species, the tree itself, and the leaves, and the fruits are larger. The latter, by the way, are less bitter. The shape looks like it «Edulis "found in the Sudeten Mountains. It has very large foliage with sparsely spaced individual leaves and huge inflorescences that turn into clusters of large red, sour-sweet berries, devoid of bitterness.

Very decorative yellow-fruited variety «Xanthocarpa ". Unfortunately, it is still extremely rare on the market.

Rowan round-leaved, or mealy(Sorbus aria) attracts with whole leaves unusual for rowan. The leaf blade is round-elliptical, leathery, 9-13 cm long. Young leaves are completely covered with a mealy-tomentose bloom, adults are dark green, dull above and white-tomentose-pubescent below. From a distance, the plant somewhat resembles a white poplar - it also has a spectacular play of foliage in the wind. The fruits are orange-red, larger than those of the river. ordinary, with a mealy sweet pulp. The tree reaches a height of 10-20 m, the crown is wide-conical, in a young one it often grows narrowly-vertical. It grows naturally in Central and Southern Europe. Extremely drought tolerant, prefers alkaline soils. Photophilous.

Sometimes on sale there is a form «Aurea "Chrysophilla "), which has shiny, golden-yellow-green, later light green foliage. A variety is imported from Poland «Globosa ", profusely branched and forming a dense spherical crown. It is characterized by abundant flowering and fruiting. The varieties are very rare in our sale. «Magnifica " and «Majestica " with larger foliage and crown size.

Rowan intermediate(Sorbus intermedia) at the same time resembles the two above-described species. Foliage whole-lobed, pubescent, reddish in autumn. The crown is more or less rounded, up to 12 m in height and width. Fruits are large, about 1.5 cm, bright red, in medium-sized clusters. It grows wild in northeastern Europe. The most frost-resistant species, resistant to urban conditions and soil compaction.

Rowan Thuringian(Sorbus x thuringiaca) - the only hybrid of the r. ordinary and p. mealy, similar to both species. The foliage is dark green, lobed, in the fall - soft brown-yellow. Slow growing tree with a compact, wide-conical crown up to 15 m high and 8 m in diameter. The flowers are white, with shields up to 12cm in diameter. Fruits are round or elliptical, bright red, mealy, about 1 cm in size.

The most common variety on sale «Fastigiata " - with a more compact crown, narrow-conical at a young age.

Recently, they began to import hybrid rowan trees to us. «Pink Veil " and «Josef Rock "... Plants resemble common mountain ash, however, they have more graceful foliage and smaller sizes. The first variety gives reddish-pink fruits, the second - pale yellow, later orange-yellow.

Hybrid Arnold's rowan(Sorbus x arnoldiana), resembling p. ordinary, according to Western literature, slightly frost-resistant, but its variety «Yellow Wonder ", interesting for its unusually beautiful orange-yellow fruits, successfully endured the extremely cold winter of 2002-2003.

Many gardeners and gardeners fell in love with Kashmir mountain ash(Sorbus cashmiriana). This small tree or a large shrub with a spreading crown, growing in the Himalayas, has proven itself perfectly in central Russia. Its foliage is rather large, feathery, dark green, matte. The flowers are large, white-pink. Fruits are about 1.5 cm in diameter, milky white, matte. Apparently, we do not grow higher than 4-5 m.

Rowan Kene(Sorbus koehneana) grows wild in Central China. This sprawling shrub up to 2-3 m high (in our conditions) is unusually decorative thanks to its fine openwork glossy dark green foliage. The flowers are pinkish-white. The fruits are plentiful, about 7 mm in diameter, pure white. The fall foliage has a variety of shades of purple, tan and even purple.

Rowan Wilmoren(Sorbus vilmorinii) is extremely rare on sale, but it is difficult to resist the temptation and not write about it. Just like R. Kene, it has small glossy foliage and is a spreading shrub 3-4 m high. White flowers give way to small red fruits. In nature, it lives in the southeast of China, in our conditions it should be planted in a place protected from adverse influences.

For the last three types, rich, moist, drained soils are preferable (their overdrying is unacceptable) in light shade or in the sun.

High-quality mountain ash is propagated mainly by grafting on mountain ash. In winter and spring, cuttings are grafted, budding is possible in summer. They also use propagation by layering and rooted semi-lignified cuttings, although the percentage of rooting is low. The species of mountain ash are propagated by seeds, which must be stratified.

Pests and diseases on mountain ash are few. The most dangerous are fungal diseases that affect weakened plants in years with dry summers and cause the death of the bark, and with a strong development - the death of branches. For prevention, it is necessary to carefully observe agricultural techniques, cut off affected branches, and process the tool. A number of species and varieties can be damaged by a fruit burn. In some years, aphids cause a lot of trouble.

The medicinal and nutritional value of mountain ash is known. Many of the described cultivars and a huge number of others (Michurin hybrids of rowan with chokeberry - "Likernaya", with medlar - "Dessert", mountain ash home) can be grown exactly as fruit crops. Do not forget that rowan fruits (which, by the way, botanists call "apples") attract a large number of birds to the gardens. Thrushes, bullfinches, waxwings will become another decoration of your garden in winter.
