Black Tulip

Queen of night

Many, for sure, are familiar with the novel by Alexander Dumas "Black Tulip", which tells in an action-packed form about the breeding of an absolutely black tulip variety. This flower has been a gardener's dream for many years. In the middle of the 17th century, the municipality of the Dutch city of Haarlem announced a prize of 100,000 guilders to the author of the black tulip. At that time, this amount could buy several houses. Finally, in 1673, such a variety was obtained. The owner of an unprecedented flower became the owner of a fortune, but the black tulip remained an unattainable dream. Both this and subsequent varieties of black tulip either turned out to be insufficiently stable, or in some way did not correspond to the color standard. Upon closer inspection, their color turned out to be not black, but rather a very dark shade of purple or burgundy. But if a person wants something, he will definitely achieve it. At the end of the last century, Dutch growers reported receiving several varieties of absolutely black tulips at once. Good news with a smack of sadness: it's always sad when there is nothing else to dream about.
