Garden cranberries from America

There are 4 types of cranberries that grow in wetlands throughout the forest and tundra zone of the northern hemisphere. These are undersized shrubs with thin threadlike branches covered with small evergreen leaves. Cranberry shoots usually spread over the moss and are invisible from a distance. Therefore, during the ripening of the berries, it seems that the moss is strewn with red balls from nowhere.

Collecting cranberries is a rather dreary business, and we can safely say that any man is unbearable. Only women with their enormous stock of patience are capable of doing such a painstaking job. However, in the Russian North, in the old days, they invented special combs for collecting cranberries. With their help, the collector literally combes the swamp, taking away from nature its precious gifts.

But in the United States, they did not expect mercy from nature. For 2 centuries, Americans have been growing cranberries as a garden plant. In America, about 200 varieties of large-fruited cranberries have been created. It fully justifies its name, because it has large, cherry-sized berries and gives quite good yields - about 11 tons per hectare. Now in the USA 11 thousand hectares of land are occupied by cranberries. They even developed a mechanized technology for growing this berry.

Canada takes the 2nd place in the world in cranberry harvest, as expected. We, as always, are lagging behind, although recently in our country attempts have been made to grow cranberries on plantations. The first such plantations have already been established in Karelia and the Kostroma region.
