Late salads are the most delicious

July is the best time to plant Dandy and Roger romaine salads. They form a strong head of cabbage and are stored for a long time in the fall (at a temperature of 3-4 ° C for 2.5-3 months). For the constant receipt of greens in July, it is better to sow varieties of leaf lettuce Andromeda, Eurydice, Abrek, Perseus, Assol, Mercury and Barbados. They are more light-loving and grow well in summer in warm sunny weather. Lettuce varieties Geyser, Gnome, Abracadabra, Skomorokh, Yakhont, Limpopo should be sown in July in a slightly shaded (preferably in the afternoon) place.

Lettuce is a long day plant, so growing in summer and autumn slows down the transition to flowering and allows you to gain a lot of greenery. In addition, in July, salads are very rarely affected by the main disease - black leg. It is especially good at this time to grow colored varieties of leaf lettuce Barbados, Zabava, Mercury, Vendetta, Skorokhod, Fire, Eurydice. They are the most frost-resistant, moreover, by autumn they gain more sugars and become sweetish in taste. In 2000, at our experimental plots in Pavlovskaya Sloboda, these varieties of lettuce stood under film shelters until mid-November without much loss of marketability.

To obtain an autumn harvest of leafy lettuce, sowing in open ground is carried out until August 5, if with shelter, then until August 15. Romaine Dandy and Roger salads for autumn-winter use are sown until mid-July.

Seeds are sown by continuous or nesting methods in prepared beds.

The seedlings in the rows are closely monitored and timely thinning (about 7-9 days after sowing), since the delay stimulates earlier flowering and, as a result, a decrease in yield.

Nesting is the most optimal sowing method (seeds are saved, labor costs for sowing and thinning are reduced), since more favorable conditions for plant growth are created. In the event that thinning is nevertheless required (approximately 7-14 days after sowing), then there is no urgent need to carry out its strict terms, in the presence of other more important work.

When growing lettuce on a bunch, special attention should be paid to how much the soil is not floating and loose and what is the content of nutrients in it. The optimal content of nutrients in the soil: nitrogen 35-50, phosphorus 20-30, potassium 40-60, magnesium 15-20, calcium 300-450 mg / 100 g of dry soil.

Additionally, only nitrogen fertilizers need to be applied to the soil. The use of phosphorus fertilizers is considered impractical. For potassium, it is recommended to switch from potassium sulfate to potassium magnesium, since it contains magnesium, which is necessary for good leaf color. It is necessary to ensure that the ratio of potassium to calcium is 1: 1.1 (mM / L), otherwise the marginal burn of the leaves is provided. The salad is sensitive to high salt content, especially chlorides. Therefore, saline soils are not suitable for its cultivation.

Watering is carried out rarely and abundantly. If there is a lack of moisture, lettuce leaves will be coarser. When waterlogged, especially the base, in cool weather, plants can rot.

Cleaning. The salad is removed in one go, the outlet is cut off and the lower rotten leaves are removed. The salad is packed in boxes, tightly stacked in several rows, the lower rows go with rosettes up, the upper ones with rosettes down.

Storage. At a temperature of 5-8 ° C, lettuce can be stored for up to a week, at a temperature of 0-1 ° C and a relative humidity of 98-100% for up to a month. Salads such as Romaine Dandy and Roger are intended to be consumed mainly in the winter, as they are characterized by good keeping quality, at a temperature of 3-4 ° C the plants are stored for 2.5-3 months. During storage, the heads of cabbage are bleached. For storage for the winter, romaine lettuce is dug from open ground in September-October. When harvesting, the salad is dug up with a clod of earth and so stored in basements and other storage facilities.
