Preparing potatoes for planting

From the very first days of April, you need to start preparing potatoes for planting. It begins with a mandatory bulkhead of tubers, which must be carried out immediately. In this case, first of all, it is necessary to select all defective tubers - those affected by dry or wet rot, scab and other diseases, as well as too small (weighing up to 25 g) and ugly, as well as tubers weighing over 100 g.

If very small tubers are used for planting, then very few stems will grow from them and the yield will be small. And if you plant too large potatoes, then the aboveground part will develop faster than the roots. And when the supply of food in the tuber runs out, the root system will not be able to provide food for the aboveground part. In this case, the development of the plant will stop until the root system grows up.

Then full-fledged tubers must be divided into three fractions: small (25-50 g), medium (50-80 g) and large (81-100 g). With a sufficient amount of potatoes, it is better to plant the middle fraction (tubers the size of a hen's egg), and small and large ones only if there is a lack of seed material. Each fraction must be planted separately, which ensures simultaneous sprouting, the same development of plants in time and timely care of the plantings.

Planting tubers that are not sorted by size leads to variegated seedlings and greatly complicates the further care of the plants.

Large tubers usually sprout earlier than small ones. And the powerful plants that have grown from them strongly oppress the slowly growing potato bushes that have grown from small tubers. And the planting density of tubers of various sizes should also be different.

The best planting material is healthy, medium-sized tubers. Large tubers are also good planting material, but their significant consumption is not always justified by a corresponding increase in yield. Small tubers can also be used for planting, especially if you selected them in the fall from the most productive bushes.

There are many ways to prepare potatoes for planting. These include heating and wilting tubers, germination, gardening, treatment with growth substances and mineral fertilizers, stimulating incisions, preparation of tuber slices, etc.
