DIY rose seedlings

the Rose

The easiest way to increase the number of roses is to go to the nursery and buy a couple more beautiful and strong plants. This method of propagating roses in your own garden is the quickest and most practical. But there are gardeners who prefer the thorny path of reproduction in other ways. For example, by grafting.

Clone

A stalk is a piece of a rose shoot that, when rooted, gives an absolute clone. Yes, grafting is cloning, which results in a rose on its own roots with the same properties and characteristics as the parent plant. And no vaccinations!

A lot of research has been devoted to the issues of vegetative propagation, one of which is cuttings. And all research is aimed at increasing the efficiency of cuttings, since this very efficiency is rather low and does not fit into the system. A 30% yield is a good result. This is the way out when the stalk not only takes root, but also builds up the green mass throughout the year.

However, there are recommendations that it is advisable to follow in order to get a rooted rose.

Action plan

  • The stalk is taken from a relatively young shoot that has grown from a bud on the main stem. However, if you are pruning and shortening the main shoot, then it will do for cutting cuttings. The main thing is that the escape is not lignified.
  • The stalk should be 15 cm long with 3-4 buds. The diameter of the shank is the same as that of a regular pencil or drink straw.
  • The lower part of the cutting is cut at an acute angle of at least 450 so that the cut is as close to the kidney as possible.
  • On the back of the kidney, a 2.5 cm long incision is made on the bark of the cutting with a sharp knife.
  • The upper part of the cutting is cut 0.5 cm above the bud.
The shank in the process of its preparationKornevin and Clonex - growth hormones
  • The lower part of the cutting is immersed in a solution or powder of growth hormone. It can be Heteroauxin, Kornevin or Clonex. The cut made on the handle should be completely immersed in the solution.

However, not all researchers insist on treating the cuttings with growth hormone. For example, the results of a 2011 study by the Botanical Garden of Voronezh University indicate that growth hormone does not in any way affect the rooting of the cuttings.

Therefore, to use Kornevin or its analogs or not to use - decide for yourself.

  • The cuttings with the treated bottom are placed in a container with prepared substrate or potting soil. The prepared soil substrate consists of a two-centimeter layer of coarse river sand, leafy soil and turf in equal amounts. River sand prevents moss formation.
  • The container is placed in a greenhouse from a plastic bag or under a jar and placed in partial shade or in a place with diffused sunlight.

In nurseries where breeding is carried out, there are special fogging installations in greenhouses that generate a moist environment for successful rooting of cuttings. A gardener who has decided to raise his status does not have such an installation, therefore a greenhouse is created from improvised means.

The nuances of care

Cuttings nursery

Ideal if you have cuttings with leaves. Their condition under the jar will tell you about the condition of the cutting as a whole. If the leaves have fallen after a week, start over. If three weeks later, there is hope for a successful outcome. Just try spraying the cutting with a mild fertilizer solution. This stimulates the appearance of new leaves.

If you are lucky, the stalk will give roots in a month. And when strong white roots appear, the stalk needs to be transplanted into a larger container and start hardening the plant by exposing it to the sun.

It must be borne in mind that the process of rooting the cuttings is intimate. So, in any case, the stalk perceives it. Therefore, try not to use transparent containers (made from plastic bottles).

Cuttings from a bouquet. Does this make sense?

Everything described above applies to garden roses and has nothing to do with bouquet roses.Of course, you can do all the manipulations with the bouquet rose presented to you by your colleagues for your fiftieth anniversary. But, if the stalk takes root, know that the angel kissed you on the crown.

The fact is that floristic roses come mainly from greenhouses of distant and not so countries, where they are grown for distillation. They are not meant to reproduce. Their task is to delight the eyes, nothing more.

In addition, floristic roses tend to have a large spacing between buds. The hero of the day will most likely receive roses with one or two buds on a 30-centimeter stem. This circumstance is by no means conducive to successful grafting.

But who knows ... Anything can be. After all, grafting does not lend itself to the system.

Good luck, dear gardeners and rose growers!

May you succeed!
