Leukotoe in central Russia

Representatives of the genus Leukotoe (Leucothoe) heather family - evergreen or deciduous shrubs. Flowers in terminal or lateral racemes or panicles, corolla lily-shaped, capsule almost spherical, 5-leafed, with not thickened sutures, sawdust-like seeds. The genus unites 9 species, distributed mainly in North and South America, as well as in Madagascar, the Himalayas and Japan. Decorative, but mostly not hardy. Grow well in light shade on well-drained, calcareous soil.

Homeland - the southeast of North America. Evergreen shrub up to 2 m high (we still have 0.5 m), with arcuate curved branches. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, 6-15 cm long, long-pointed, finely serrate, glabrous, dark green, shiny. Flowers in dense axillary racemes. Corolla white, 4–7 mm long. Blooms in June. The fruit is a box with small seeds, the seeds do not ripen annually.

Not very winter-hardy, the ends of the shoots can freeze slightly, and perennial wood suffers in severe winters. Tested 5 samples, now in collection 3, received in 1985-1990. from Bochum (Germany), Vaasland arboretum (Newkerken, Belgium) and Rogow (Poland).

 

Leukotoe Gray (Leucothoegrayana)

Until recently, this species belonged to a small, of 2 species, genus Eubotrioides (Eubotryoides) entitled gray eubotrioides(Eubotryoides grayana).

Homeland - South Sakhalin, Japan. Deciduous or semi-evergreen upright shrub up to 1 m tall with light gray branches and yellow shoots. The foliage is alternate, the leaves are elliptical, up to 9 cm long, glabrous from above, pubescent from below along the veins, ciliate along the edge. Flowers in clusters up to 12 cm long. Corolla greenish-white or pinkish, bell-shaped, pitcher-shaped, up to 6 mm long. Blooms in June – August, irregularly. The seeds do not ripen.

Every year 1-2-year-old shoots freeze slightly, in severe winters it freezes up to the root collar. freezes over, in some years it is severely damaged by spring frosts. Tested 2 samples, now in collection 1, received in 1985 from Tarandt (Germany).
